The US continued its weekly strikes on Iran, carrying out a third air operation on Sunday morning. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that approximately 140 military targets were struck in this attack.
The strikes, carried out by fighter jets carrying high-precision munitions, were in response to Iran's attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Targets included missile depots and naval facilities
The targets included missile and drone storage areas, military arsenals, communication systems, coastal observation points, and naval facilities.
More than 300 targets were destroyed in the three-night operation.
Iran's capability was targeted on Trump's orders
US Central Command announced that the strikes were carried out on President Donald Trump's orders to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial vessels and mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement also noted that since early May, US forces have provided safe escort to more than 800 commercial vessels and approximately 400 million barrels of crude oil in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military had previously carried out strikes on Iran on July 7 and 8, citing Iran's targeting of commercial vessels as the reason for those attacks.
