FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced plans to further expand the World Cup. Infantino said that after the 2026 World Cup, which has been expanded to 48 teams, the idea of a 64-team World Cup will be evaluated.
Speaking to Switzerland's Blue Sport portal, the FIFA President said, "Every nation should be allowed to dream of participating in the World Cup." Infantino described the 48-team tournament, which is being held this year in the United States, Canada and Mexico and will conclude on July 19, as a "tremendous success."
The 2026 World Cup is the first in history to feature 48 national teams. The FIFA President stated that following the success of this expansion, the transition to a 64-team format will be taken up by the relevant committees.
