Real Madrid star goalkeeper and one of Belgium's captains, Thibaut Courtois, announced that he could bid farewell to the national team after the injury he sustained in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal against Spain.
Courtois felt pain during a long kick in the 67th minute and received treatment on the sidelines. However, in the 72nd minute, he was forced to leave the field in tears, replaced by Senne Lammens.
"This could be my last international match"
Speaking after the match, Courtois said about his national team future:
"We'll see what happens with my international future. Maybe I'll take a break from the Nations League because it's not the most important tournament for me. Then I'll return for the European Championship qualifiers. But ultimately the decision belongs to the Belgian Football Federation. If they don't see fit, this could be my last match."
Courtois described the injury moment: "I felt something during a long kick. At first I thought it was just a tired hamstring. There was discomfort during saves, then the pain increased with another long ball. After the doctor's check I wanted to continue, but I realized I couldn't take long kicks."
Defended the backup goalkeeper
Courtois also spoke about the goal Spain scored after a mistake by backup goalkeeper Senne Lammens, saying: "The pitch was very dry, it was just bad luck. That's football, we shouldn't blame or attack the player. He's a great goalkeeper, he had a fantastic season at Manchester United, he doesn't deserve this criticism."
Courtois noted that Spain capitalized on their chances better, adding: "They created more opportunities in the second half, but I was good on saves and Lamine Yamal's crosses. I thought it would be very difficult for them to score a second goal."
Real Madrid return message
The experienced goalkeeper concluded by reassuring Real Madrid fans: "I'm looking forward to returning to Real Madrid. First I'll wait for the MRI results, I don't think the injury is serious. I hope to be fully ready by mid-August."
Courtois has suffered several muscle injuries in recent years. The goalkeeper, who most recently injured his right quadriceps in March, returned to action in May.
