The US State Department approved a possible $2.68 billion sale aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. The package includes the modernization of existing systems, along with equipment and services to be used in this area.
The requested items include S-300-variant missiles, GAM-67 missiles and laser-guided air defense rocket and missile systems with extended range. Ukraine also requested launcher modification kits and radars to be used against unmanned aerial vehicles.
Funding will come from European and US sources
The technical component of the possible sale includes deployable mast trailers, spare parts and software. Engineering and logistical support are also included in the package.
If the sale is completed, it will be financed through European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing funds allocated during the previous administration. These funds will be recorded as a US contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a one-to-one reimbursement mechanism.
No additional US personnel will be deployed
The US State Department said the proposed sale would strengthen the security of a partner country that is making political and economic progress in Europe and would contribute to US foreign policy and national security objectives.
According to the department, the package will enhance Ukraine’s capacity to address current and future threats but will not alter the fundamental military balance in the region. The sale will not require the deployment of additional US personnel to Ukraine.
