Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate announced that a Russian UAV attack took place in the area housing the Nuclear Research Institute in Kyiv.
In a statement, the institute, affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said the incident occurred at 6:18 p.m. on September 30, 2026. The fire that broke out after the attack was extinguished within a short time, and no one was injured.

No damage detected at Kyiv research reactor
The VVR-M research reactor at the institute’s premises and systems important to safety were not affected by the attack, the statement said. No change in radiation levels was recorded, with measurements remaining within the natural range of 0.16–0.20 microsieverts per hour.

The statement said that an investigation and damage assessment were continuing after the incident, while the reactor has been kept shut down with its core completely unloaded since February 2022 to reduce radiation risks. It added that only routine maintenance of safety-critical systems was being carried out.
