The Gen Pharma Caucasus Manufacturing Operations MMC pharmaceutical production facility, the latest step in economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye in the healthcare sector, has been inaugurated. President Aliyev opened the facility, which was established at Pirallahi Industrial Park.
The factory, established through cooperation between Turkish company GEN İlaç ve Sağlık Ürünleri AŞ and Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy, occupies an area of 5.2 hectares. The facility’s annual production capacity is planned at 60 million boxes, equivalent to approximately 2.5 billion tablets and capsules.
Pharmaceutical production to reach regional countries
The factory will produce painkillers and antibiotics, as well as medicines used in cardiology, neurology, urology, diabetology and gastroenterology. The facility is expected to provide permanent employment for 178 people.
The production line will use equipment from leading companies in the United States, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, China, Denmark, Sweden and Türkiye. In addition to meeting the needs of Azerbaijan’s domestic market, the facility is planned to export to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and other countries.
Formal training hub established for universities
An infrastructure supporting education and scientific cooperation has been established within the factory. A formal training hub has been set up on the premises for Karabakh University and Azerbaijan Medical University.
The infrastructure is intended to enable the factory to contribute to training and scientific studies aimed at developing Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical industry.
Target of 50 medicines by 2027
Abidin Gülmüş, chairman of the board of GEN İlaç ve Sağlık Ürünleri AŞ, said it was a source of pride for them that President Aliyev had inaugurated the facility. He said they aimed to develop Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical sector, which is at an early stage.
Gülmüş said the factory had been established to enable the local production of vital medicines. He announced that 66 percent of the company’s shares belonged to GEN İlaç, while 29 percent belonged to the Business Development Fund of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy.
Gülmüş said construction had been completed in less than two years and that priority would be given to producing vital medicines needed by Azerbaijan’s healthcare system. He said the initial target was to produce 50 medicines in 2027.
Gülmüş said the factory was important for the development of Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical industry and economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye. He said they were the only factory capable of carrying out production from raw materials through to the final product, adding that they aimed to increase the number of products to more than 500 within five years by completing new drug formulations.
