Donald Trump published a map on his social media account showing the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. The strategic waterway was labeled “New U.S. territory” in the image.
The post brought back into focus Trump’s earlier remarks that he could declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory. At an event on August 14, Trump claimed that the U.S. Navy was enforcing a full blockade in the strait.
After completely defeating Iran—which is being defeated very heavily—I will declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory in a short time.
In another social media post the same day, Trump said that the United States had “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz and said he believed Washington could maintain that control. The U.S. president also linked the reopening of the strait to the process with Iran and U.S. intervention.
Tehran’s condition for reopening
Iranian officials said the Strait of Hormuz would not reopen unless U.S. intervention and the naval blockade ended. The Tehran administration also demanded that the terms of the U.S.-Iran agreement signed on June 17 be fulfilled.
