US President Donald Trump said Washington was ahead in its technology competition with China, arguing that artificial intelligence regulations included protective guardrails.
Speaking in an interview published by FOX News on Friday, Trump said the US administration had established safety guardrails for artificial intelligence. He claimed that the strongest oversight in China came directly from the country's leader.
The decision concerning Anthropic
When asked what measures could be taken to ensure that the United States won the artificial intelligence race and to reassure Americans concerned about data centers, Trump cited Anthropic as an example.
Trump said Anthropic had done something very bad three months earlier and that the company's activities had been halted quickly. The Trump administration had previously designated the company a security risk and barred Anthropic from working with the US government.
A federal judge ruled at the end of last month that the administration's decision was unlawful.
The Washington-Beijing technology race
Trump said the most important safeguard for protective boundaries in artificial intelligence was people who understood the technology and possessed extremely high levels of intelligence.
Arguing that similar guardrails did not exist in China, Trump said the decision-maker there was Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump claimed that the United States was winning the competition against China and said artificial intelligence could be a greater development than the internet and possibly the Industrial Revolution.
Trump said it could become clear within about a year whether the technology was the greatest development in history. He also said artificial intelligence would produce predominantly positive results.
