Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned as student-led protests continued across the country. The decision paved the way for both snap parliamentary elections and an early presidential election.
Vučić will run for prime minister from the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in the snap parliamentary elections planned for October 25.
Vučić resigned during his second term because the constitution does not allow him to run for president for a third time.
National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić will serve as president until a new president is elected. Under Serbian law, the presidential election must be held within three months of Vučić’s resignation.
