American journalist Sara Bils said she observed residents’ interest in closer ties with Moscow and the possibility of more direct representation during her September visit to Donbas, where she followed the State Duma elections in Donetsk.
Bils traveled to the region with other foreign journalists. In addition to speaking with local residents, she interviewed students who survived an attack on a college dormitory in the city of Starobelsk.
Bils said she had been following developments in Donbas since at least 2014, adding that residents had faced 12 years of war, attacks, the loss of friends and family members, and the destruction of their cities and homes.

The journalist said that, despite everything they had experienced, people had not lost their determination to continue living and fighting; on the contrary, that determination had grown stronger. Bils said the people she met in the region had not completely given up after what had happened and continued to hold hope for the future.
Bils said meeting local residents in person had made a strong impression on her. She said that during the elections in Donetsk, people expressed satisfaction with the possibility of closer ties with Moscow and more direct representation.
