Speaking in Berlin, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Russia had failed to achieve the results it sought in Ukraine and that its latest steps were a sign of weakness.
At a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Rutte said NATO stood in solidarity with Germany following the hybrid attack in Leipzig attributed to Russia. He said he appreciated Berlin's resolute and measured steps.
NATO will increase support for Ukraine
The NATO secretary general said the allies stood with Germany and summarized the alliance's approach with the words, "one for all, all for one."
Rutte said Russia was trying to divide NATO, but the allies continued to act together. He also claimed that Russia was trying to prevent support for Ukraine and announced that more support would be provided to Ukraine.
Critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea will be protected
Rutte said the allies were taking measures against Russia's "shadow fleet" and that these steps were ensuring that Russia paid a price. He said NATO continued to contribute to the protection of critical infrastructure and that forces had been deployed in the Baltic Sea for this purpose.
Rutte said Russia was trying to appear strong but NATO was stronger, adding that Ukraine also demonstrated its resolve every day.
