Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) announced that the domestic passenger jet MC-21 has achieved a range of over 3,800 kilometers with 175 passengers and fuel reserves. Although this falls short of the initially calculated range of 6,350 kilometers, UAC considers the result a major success.
Ideal performance for medium range
The MC-21 was designed as a medium-range aircraft. For this class of planes, a range of around 4,000 kilometers is considered in line with industry standards. UAC officials noted that the current range covers 80 to 90 percent of the aircraft's target routes. In this configuration, the MC-21 can reach the western edge of Europe, from Moscow to the UK, and cover a significant portion of Siberia.
Range expectations in early versions
It is well known in the aviation industry that early versions of aircraft developed from scratch are often heavier, resulting in a range below targets. UAC expects that improvements over time will lighten the aircraft and increase the range. The first version of the Russian regional jet Superjet-100 had a range of about 3,000 kilometers, while later modifications brought this figure to 4,500 kilometers.
Development similar to Boeing 737
Experiences of Western manufacturers paint a similar picture. The first generation of the Boeing 737 had a range of only 2,775 kilometers. In subsequent generations, this distance increased to 3,500 kilometers, and in the third and fourth generations, to 5,000-5,427 kilometers. When the range exceeded 6,000 kilometers, the aircraft had transformed into a significantly different modification from its original form.
Russian engineering approach
The Russian aircraft design school prioritizes safety by initially manufacturing components with nearly double the strength. During testing and operation, unnecessary weight is identified and the structure is lightened. In the West, the opposite approach is generally taken; maximum lightness is targeted first, and reinforcements are made as durability issues arise. UAC emphasizes that thanks to this approach, the MC-21 has achieved a good range suitable for its class even in its first version.
A first under sanctions
The MC-21 is the only passenger aircraft in its class developed entirely by a single country. Russia achieved this success in an environment of sanctions and restricted access to foreign technology. UAC stated that the achieved range provides a solid foundation for the next modification and that the range could surpass 6,000 kilometers in the future.
