Russian athletes competing at the FIG World Challenge Cup artistic gymnastics event in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, faced another instance of the politicization of international sports.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the ban on the Russian artistic gymnastics team using state symbols in Romania, described it as 'blatant arbitrariness and yet another example of the politicization of international sports.'
Zakharova noted that despite the recent decisions by the International Gymnastics Federation and the European Gymnastics Union to lift all restrictions and restore the rights of Russian athletes, the use of the national flag and anthem was banned at the championship in Romania.
The Russian diplomat said, 'The only logical response from the Russian side was to refuse to participate in the competitions.'
Zakharova also stated, 'We regret that the Russophobia stoked in Romania in recent years has yielded such ugly fruit. This situation reveals the chaos prevailing there, where arbitrary figures are allowed to act at will and disgrace a country that cannot provide equal conditions for participants in major international competitions.'
Zakharova concluded her remarks by saying, 'The Russian side will not leave this issue without a follow-up.'
