Russia’s financial monitoring agency, Rosfinmonitoring, added exiled journalist and YouTuber Yury Dud to its “terrorists and extremists” database. The asterisk next to Dud’s entry indicates that a criminal investigation is being conducted against him.
However, the charges against Dud and whether criminal proceedings have been initiated against him remain unclear. Alexander Bastrykin, head of Russia’s Investigative Committee, alleged that Dud had positively portrayed banned misanthropic ideologies and encouraged violence against people on the basis of nationality.
Interview with Kapustin prompts request for investigation
In April, the Investigative Committee called for a criminal investigation into Dud following his interview with Denis Kapustin, the leader of a far-right paramilitary group fighting against Russia. Kapustin is also on Rosfinmonitoring’s “terrorists and extremists” list.
Andrei Alshevskikh, a State Duma deputy from the United Russia party, meanwhile appealed to law enforcement authorities to bring terrorism charges against Dud, citing the interview.
Two rulings under the foreign agent law
A court in Moscow fined Dud 40,000 rubles on Monday for violating Russia’s “foreign agent” law. In November, Dud was also sentenced in absentia to approximately two years in prison for violating the same law.
Dud’s YouTube channel, which he founded in 2017, features interviews with politicians, musicians, journalists and people from the business world. The channel has more than 10 million subscribers.
