Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the 22nd Russia-Kazakhstan Interregional Cooperation Forum in Omsk. The talks focused on the concrete indicators of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Putin stressed that relations are strategic in substance, not merely in name. According to a statement from the Kremlin press service, bilateral trade volume reached $27.8 billion last year, and an increase of over 4% was recorded in the first five months of this year.
Investments reach $30 billion
The Russian leader said that alongside growing trade, investments also create a strong foundation for the future. He announced that the total value of around 70 joint projects involving Russian businesses has reached $30 billion. "There is much to be proud of in this area," Putin said, reiterating that ties are developing successfully.
Coordination on the international stage
Putin recalled that Moscow and Astana actively cooperate on the international arena and within all regional organizations. Noting that Russia chairs the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) this year while Kazakhstan chairs the Eurasian Economic Union, he said, "There is a great deal to discuss and consult on here as well."
Putin noted that direct interregional ties are developing rapidly, reporting that more than 650 senior politicians, governors, regional officials and businesspeople attended the forum. Thanking officials from both sides, the Russian leader added that a number of agreements were being signed.
The forum, held under the theme "Building a global logistics ecosystem: new horizons in Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation," is taking place in Omsk on July 24-25. Putin and Tokayev are expected to attend the plenary session.
