Russian President Vladimir Putin said the potential consequences of advances in artificial intelligence, particularly for military applications, must be understood.
Speaking at Valday on October 1, Putin said the technology’s role would grow and that human history showed progress could not be stopped. He said the same assessment applied to artificial intelligence.

Putin said cases in which artificial intelligence makes decisions based on its own understanding of its interests were already being seen. He said such cases involved both civilian and military applications.
The Valday Club
The Valday Discussion Club brings together Russian and foreign experts who study political science, economics, history and international relations. The club was established in September 2004 on the initiative of RIA Novosti, the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, and the Russia in Global Affairs and Russia Profile magazines.

The Valday Club takes its name from the Veliky Novgorod region, where the first conference was held near Lake Valday.
