More than 650,000 people in Primorye, in Russia’s Far East, were left without tap water due to a failure in the electricity infrastructure. The affected areas include thousands of homes and public buildings in Vladivostok, the regional capital.
Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said the problem was caused by equipment failure at an electrical substation in the village of Shtykovo. The failure also left more than 1,000 people in the village without electricity.
Pumps stopped working in Vladivostok
The outage at the substation disabled regional water pumping stations. As a result, homes and apartment buildings in Vladivostok, as well as schools and hospitals, lost access to water services.
Technical teams began installing backup generators to restore the system. While repairs continued at the Shtykovo substation, water tankers were sent to some parts of Vladivostok.
The regional public utilities ministry urged residents to stock up on sufficient drinking water if possible. Authorities expected the repair work to be completed during Monday.
Infrastructure deterioration reaches 80 percent
Utility service disruptions are said to be widespread in Russia. Authorities estimate that the deterioration rate of infrastructure networks ranges from 40 percent to 80 percent, depending on the region.
