Poland intercepted a Russian reconnaissance plane with fighter jets in an incident over the Baltic Sea. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on the X platform that a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance plane was detected in international airspace 60 kilometres northwest of Łeba.
Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz said that two Polish fighter jets intervened and intercepted the Russian plane. He acknowledged that Polish airspace was not violated in the incident. However, he claimed the Russian plane was flying without a flight plan and with its transponder off.
The Russian Defence Ministry had previously stressed that flights by Russian warplanes over neutral waters are conducted in full compliance with international rules. The ministry stated that the aircraft carry out their missions without entering air traffic routes and without causing dangerous proximity to foreign aircraft.
