Poland is launching a new military structure to enhance border security against Russia and Belarus. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz told the Defence24 website that the unit, to be established under the name 'Border Protection Component', will operate against hybrid threats, illegal migration and drone attacks.
This military component will be implemented as part of Poland's 'Eastern Shield' project, launched in 2024. The project aims to increase security capacity on the borders with Russia and Belarus.
The Border Protection Component is also expected to contribute to strengthening NATO's eastern flank. Warsaw's move is seen as a reflection of the growing military preparations in Eastern Europe.
