The future of a planned permanent US military base in Poland will become clear after Washington completes its review of US forces in Europe. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka announced that a final decision is expected by the end of the year.
Speaking to reporters in Washington on Wednesday, Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said the US review of its forces in Europe could be completed in November or December. The deputy minister said the final decision rests with US President Donald Trump and noted that Poland had prepared a shortlist of possible locations for the base, but had not disclosed them.
Trump’s confirmation awaited
Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, said a decision had been made at the political level but still needed to be confirmed by Trump.
Przydacz said Polish defense officials would work to turn the commitment into concrete arrangements. Elbridge Colby, the US Department of War’s Deputy Under Secretary for Policy, also said Washington was “actively working” to strengthen its presence in Poland.
Separate process for PAC-3 service center
Sobkowiak-Czarnecka also said a separate decision could be made within days on Poland’s offer to host a service center in Europe for PAC-3 missiles used in Patriot air defense systems.
Poland argues that carrying out missile maintenance and repairs domestically could reduce service times from more than a year to several months.
