Lithuania’s plan to lift its ban on deploying nuclear weapons has drawn a stern security warning from the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such a move would make Lithuania a target for Russia’s nuclear weapons.
Speaking to Russia’s Channel One, Peskov assessed Lithuania’s plan to remove the constitutional ban on deploying nuclear weapons on its territory. The Kremlin spokesman warned that such a decision would dangerously escalate tensions.
Claim of deployment against Russia
Peskov argued that if nuclear weapons were placed on Lithuanian territory, they would be aimed in a specific direction. He said it was clear that the weapons would be deployed not toward the West but toward the east, namely against Russia.
Peskov said the territory of a country possessing nuclear weapons directed against Russia would become a target for Russia’s nuclear weapons. He based his warning to Lithuania on this assessment.
Lithuania prepares constitutional amendment
One day earlier, Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas said the country was preparing a constitutional amendment for the coming winter session.
The plan calls for lifting the ban on deploying nuclear weapons on Lithuanian territory.
