Interest in the digital ruble is steadily growing in Russia's financial system. A survey conducted by Vyberu.Ru among 3,000 people revealed that 35% of Russian citizens want to receive their state social benefits in digital rubles.
While 24% of respondents plan to use the new currency for tax and fine payments, 19% said they are ready to use the digital ruble for everyday shopping at places like supermarkets and stores. The share of those wanting to use it for online shopping was 15%, and for person-to-person money transfers, 7%.
Trust and security assessment
The survey showed that Russians' trust in the digital ruble has not yet fully settled. While 18% of respondents expressed full trust in the new payment instrument, 44% said they partially trust it. One in four (24%) do not yet have a clear opinion. The share of those who said they partially distrust the digital ruble is 8%, and those who said they do not trust it at all is 6%.
Opinions on security are divided. 56% of respondents believe that the digital ruble will be safer than a bank card or the Faster Payments System due to the oversight of the Central Bank of Russia and higher protection of transactions. A 25% segment thinks that existing banking services are already sufficiently secure, so the security level will be similar. In contrast, a 17% group is concerned about technical failures and data leak risks.
Integration with banking applications is important
For the vast majority of Russians, the digital ruble's compatibility with existing banking applications is critically important. 71% of respondents emphasized that being able to use the digital ruble through their own bank's mobile app is an indispensable condition for them.
The digital ruble is positioned as a third form of money in Russia, alongside cash and non-cash funds. For this new system, which does not eliminate existing payment methods, all systemically important banks and credit institutions deemed significant in payment services will be required to connect to the digital ruble platform starting from September 1, 2026.
