The number of Ukrainian students studying at US higher education institutions hit a record high as President Donald Trump tightened immigration policies. In the 2024/2025 academic year, the number of Ukrainian students in the US was recorded at 2,346.
This figure represents a 28 percent increase compared to the 1,835 students in the 2021/2022 academic year. In the previous year, 2023/2024, there were 2,183 Ukrainian students, resulting in an annual increase of 7.5 percent.
Meanwhile, data for the 2025/2026 academic year has not yet been released. Overall, student visa entries to the US declined after Trump returned to the White House. According to data from the US International Trade Administration, the number of student visa entries into the country in the January-March 2026 period fell by about 10 percent compared to the same period last year, from 495,000 to 445,000.
This increase in the number of Ukrainian students comes at a time when overall interest in foreign students in the US is declining. According to a Washington Post report published in June, the decline in the number of foreign students due to the Trump administration's tightening of immigration policies is putting financial strain on American universities.
In addition to the mass deportation campaign launched during Trump's second term, scrutiny of student visa applicants has also intensified. Officials have begun examining applicants' social media activities and past activities in greater detail.
