SVR Director Sergey Naryshkin told journalists in Moscow on September 24 that the West had interfered in Russia’s election campaign. Naryshkin said Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service had detected the interference.
Naryshkin also alleged that a document had been prepared in advance at the European Commission to declare that the elections had gone badly.
“There was interference, and we detected it. We saw that a document had been prepared in advance at the European Commission to declare that the elections had gone badly.”
The SVR press bureau also said in a statement at the end of July that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament were preparing to announce that they did not recognize the results of the elections in Russia. The bureau said this position would be justified by alleged serious violations during the elections.
In the same statement, it was alleged that Europe had left it to non-systemic opposition circles in Russia operating abroad to spread claims that the elections were “illegitimate and unlawful.”
Russia’s elections covered 20,700 legislative and elected positions
Other elections, held alongside elections for deputies to the ninth State Duma, took place from September 18 to 20. A total of 20,700 legislative and elected positions were contested on the unified election day in 2026.
Before the elections, Russian President Vladimir Putin had described the State Duma elections as the country’s most important domestic political development.
