The 460th traditional diving competition was held this year on the historic Mostar Bridge, an Ottoman-era landmark in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thousands watched as 34 athletes from Western Balkan countries competed.
In the head-first category, Evald Krnic took first place, Dino Bajric second, and Ahmet Stupac third. In the feet-first category, Igor Kazic won first place, with Harun Bajgoric second and Vanja Golos third. Kazic received a perfect score from the judges for his 11th victory in this category.
A bridge destroyed in war and rebuilt
Mostar Bridge was built in 1566 by Mimar Hayrettin, a student of Mimar Sinan. During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was destroyed by tank fire from Croat forces on November 9, 1993. Despite the war conditions, the people of Mostar continued the traditional diving festival from the bridge's ruins.
Rebuilt true to its original form in 2004 with Turkey's initiative, the bridge remains a symbol of tolerance and cultural diversity. Since then, the diving competition has attracted athletes from Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and other countries.
The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi also mentioned the diving competitions at Mostar Bridge in his work Seyahatname.
