The 151st anniversary of the founding of the national press in Azerbaijan is being celebrated. July 22 has been designated as National Press Day in the country.
Considered the country's first national newspaper, 'Ekinci' began publication in 1875 by Hasan Bey Zerdabi. The newspaper's launch resonated widely across the Caucasus region. Zerdabi is also recognized as one of the pioneers of Azerbaijan's national enlightenment movement.
The founding process of 'Ekinci' also saw contributions from leading intellectuals of the time, including Mirza Fethali Ahundov, Seyid Azim Shirvani, Necef Bey Vezirov, and Asker Agha Gorani. The birth of the national press in Azerbaijan dates back to the mid-19th century.
The emergence of the press was closely linked to the political, economic, and cultural transformations in the country. Developing alongside the enlightenment movement, modern theater, and the establishment of new types of schools, the press became a new medium of political, cultural, and scientific interaction for Azerbaijan and the entire Eastern world.
Today, hundreds of press organizations, news agencies, television and radio channels, along with rapidly developing internet resources, play a significant role in meeting the information needs of society in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani press has contributed to the formation of national consciousness, the instilling of patriotic feelings, and the promotion of national values; it also played an active role in the people's struggle for freedom and independence.
