Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court sentenced Czech citizen Michal Plamenek to 13 days in jail for holding a sign in Red Square.
The court’s press service said Plamenek was detained on Sunday afternoon while carrying an English-language sign next to Lenin’s Mausoleum. The wording on the sign was not disclosed. However, the court’s press service said the court ruled that the text was “intended to discredit Russia’s armed forces.”
Three administrative charges and a fine
Protests are banned in Red Square, which is located directly next to the Kremlin. Plamenek reportedly refused a police request to go to the station and resisted during his detention.
The judge found Plamenek responsible for three separate administrative offenses: discrediting the Russian army, violating protest rules and failing to comply with a police officer’s instructions.
The court imposed a fine of 40,000 rubles for the first charge and 20,000 rubles for the second. Plamenek was sentenced to 13 days in jail for the third charge.
