Moldova's parliament rejected the opposition's attempt to bring forward an allegation that Ukrainian intelligence agencies had recruited Moldovan citizens to carry out a terrorist act in another country. All 52 lawmakers from the Action and Solidarity Party voted against the proposal.
Detention and charges in Russia
The allegations on the agenda were also to be discussed in connection with developments involving a 21-year-old Moldovan citizen detained in Russia. Russia's Investigative Committee announced that the suspect had been detained in the Astrakhan region.
The suspect was accused of attempting to kill a Russian serviceman in the Engels district of the Saratov region. He faced charges of committing a terrorist act, attempting to kill military personnel and the illegal circulation of weapons.
Opposition calls for security service chief to testify
Adrian Domentyuk, a lawmaker from the opposition Party of Communists of Moldova, said that the country's security situation had raised questions in recent days. Domentyuk said citizens needed to be informed about the allegation that Ukrainian intelligence agencies had recruited a young Moldovan citizen to carry out a terrorist act in another country.
Domentyuk also called for Aleksandru Musteata, head of Moldova's Information and Security Service, to testify in parliament about the alleged recruitment. However, the proposal could not be placed on the agenda because all lawmakers from the ruling party voted against it.
Allegations of forced mobilization
Opposition lawmakers said before the parliamentary session that they planned to ask Musteata what steps had been taken in response to allegations that Moldovan citizens were being forcibly recruited into the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Representatives of Moldova's Democracy at Home Party alleged that 43-year-old Vasili Ukrainchuk, a resident of the village of Grimancauti in the Briceni region, had been forcibly mobilized in April. At the end of July, it was also alleged that another Moldovan citizen had been taken from a bus near the country's border and forcibly mobilized.
Moldovan authorities said they were examining information about the incident.
