The drone incident at Leipzig Airport last month brought messages of solidarity between France and Germany against hybrid attacks in Europe to the forefront. French President Emmanuel Macron said such attacks cannot go unanswered.
Macron said Germany held Russia responsible for the serious incident that occurred in Leipzig in early August. Saying that hybrid attacks in Europe were increasing, Macron announced that France stood in full solidarity with Germany and supported new European sanctions against Russia.
Berlin announces diplomatic and legal measures against Moscow
Germany blamed Russia for the incident at Leipzig Airport and announced comprehensive measures and sanctions against Moscow.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said at a press conference in Berlin that investigators had concluded the plan was prepared by Russian intelligence services and carried out by lower-level operatives.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also announced that Russia’s ambassador to Berlin had been summoned. Wadephul said Germany’s protest was conveyed during the meeting and that the ambassador was informed about the government’s planned response.
Russia’s consulate general in Bonn to close
Wadephul announced that Russia’s consulate general in Bonn would close on September 18. He also said the agreement concerning the Russian House in Berlin would be terminated.
The Soviet-era cultural center in Berlin had long been viewed by Western officials as a potential cover for intelligence activities.
Logistics chain considered the target of the Leipzig incident
Leipzig Airport is an important transport and logistics hub for military cargo operations, including Antonov flights operated for Ukraine.
Officials assessed that the thwarted drone operation aimed to disrupt this support chain for Ukraine without carrying out a conventional attack. Under this assessment, the operation targeted a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft in August.
German authorities said in statements to the press last week that the incident was more serious than initial assessments had indicated. Investigators later concluded that multiple drones, rather than a single aircraft, had been used in the incident involving a drone said to have been equipped with explosives.
Moscow rejects the allegations
Russia has previously denied allegations of assassinations, sabotage, drone incursions and espionage in countries supporting Ukraine. Moscow accused Western governments of fueling “anti-Russian paranoia.”
