North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw an intermediate-range strategic missile launch drill at dawn on Saturday, October 3, aimed at training troops operating the country’s "hypersonic strategic weapon system," the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. The missile hit a target 1,000 kilometers away in the East Sea, according to KCNA.

South Korea’s military said the missile was launched from the Wonsan area and flew more than 700 kilometers. Kim’s sister Kim Yo-jong claimed South Korean and Japanese forces had failed to track the missile’s trajectory.
