Iran’s Foreign Ministry called on governments to oppose the United States’ new sanctions against Iran. In a written statement, the ministry argued that the sanctions violate the United Nations Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights, regardless of their name or scope.
The ministry argued that the sanctions were therefore entirely illegal and unjust, and said all countries should refrain from joining the measures.
Call to reject the consequences of sanctions
Iran’s Foreign Ministry also called on governments not to recognize or approve consequences arising from actions taken in violation of the sanctions.
The ministry argued that countries joining the United States’ unilateral sanctions would help Washington impose its will on other states. The statement said these measures disrupt countries’ legitimate economic and trade relations.
Iran says it will use all available means
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the country would use all available means to defend itself against the economic war and threats from the United States and Israel. The statement signaled that the Iranian administration could resort to economic and political measures in response to the sanctions.
The US administration had previously announced what it called “the most crushing” sanctions package in history against Iran and threatened third countries cooperating with Iran with sanctions.
