As Greece battles forest fires that have been ongoing for six days, a new fire has broken out near the capital Athens. The fire that started in the Koropi area is once again straining the country's firefighting capacity.
To tackle the fire that started in low vegetation near the industrial area in Koropi, 52 firefighters, three ground teams, and 14 fire engines were deployed. Two firefighting planes and four helicopters are involved in the aerial response. The Municipality of Koropi also sent water tankers to the area.
Arson suspicion and warnings
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection of Greece sent an alert message to residents via the emergency warning system 112, urging them to be cautious due to the risk of the fire spreading. The arson unit has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The major fire that has been raging for six days
The battle against the large forest fire that started last week in the Boeotia region and spread to the western part of Attica is continuing for the sixth day. According to data from the Copernicus satellite system, the fire has so far burned approximately 14,400 hectares.
In a tragic accident during the firefighting efforts, two firefighting helicopters collided in mid-air. A Danish pilot and a Greek air coordinator lost their lives in the crash.
Although the fires have been largely brought under control, the fire danger level remains high in many parts of the country due to expected high temperatures and strong winds.
