Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost Brazil’s presidential runoff on October 25, may have left the country. A senior U.S. State Department official said Tuesday that the Trump administration would issue visas to him and members of his family.
The day before, Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered Flávio Bolsonaro to surrender his passports as part of an investigation into money laundering allegations. The politician denies the accusations and said Monday, before reports of his departure emerged, that he had “never thought about leaving the country” and would stay to lead the opposition.

The son of former President Jair Bolsonaro lost to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by more than 4.4 million votes. He initially refused to recognize the election result, but his party said Monday that it accepted the outcome.
Lula, who turned 81 on Tuesday, called his opponent’s departure “shameful.” “A man who secretly leaves his country must have something to hide,” he said.
