Armed groups in Mali launched simultaneous attacks on five different locations around 05:00 local time on Saturday. The targets included the northern town of Anefis, where Russian soldiers are deployed, and Kenieroba, south of the capital Bamako.
The Malian army announced that the attacks targeted Aguelhok, Anefis, Gao, Sevare and Kenieroba. According to the AFP news agency, the large prison complex in Kenieroba was also attacked.
Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane confirmed to Reuters that the group attacked the town of Anefis in the northeastern Kidal region. In a statement to AFP, Ramadane said, 'Many positions have fallen, but fighting continues inside the town.'
A resident of Anefis told AFP, 'Armed groups are in the town, but the army is still resisting. The camp there has not fallen yet.'
The Malian army and Russian fighters had deployed to Anefis after attacks on 25-26 April in which the FLA and Al-Qaeda-linked groups seized the town of Kidal. Anefis and Aguelhok are known as the last points where the Malian army maintains a presence in the Kidal region following the April attacks.
In the central city of Gao, a local official told Reuters that gunfire and rocket fire were directed at a military camp before dawn. It is not yet clear which group was responsible for the attack.
In another central town, Sevare, explosions were heard around 05:00. A security source speaking to AFP said the source of the explosions was not yet known, and that numerous aircraft were seen over the area shortly afterwards.
A prisoner at the Kenieroba prison also told AFP that the prison was under attack.
Saturday's attacks were recorded as the latest threat to the military administration in Mali. In April, the airport in the capital Bamako was attacked, the defence minister was killed, and a series of army bases in the north were seized.
