The European Union Council has begun preparations to officially open the first chapter of accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine. Cyprus, holding the rotating presidency, announced it will work intensively to finalize the matter within the Council in the coming days.
The presidency's statement indicated that today the preparatory process for opening the first chapter in membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova has started. This paves the way for the two countries to technically enter a new phase in the EU accession process.
Negotiations May Begin on June 15
It was reported that talks between the parties could start at the intergovernmental conference on EU enlargement expected to be held in Luxembourg on June 15. This meeting is seen as a critical milestone for the official opening in the accession process.
Accession negotiations aim to align the candidate country's legislation with European Union law. This process typically lasts more than 10 years and does not follow a fixed timetable.
Lengthy Membership Process
It was recalled that Turkey's membership talks, which began in 2005, have lasted 20 years without presenting a concrete membership perspective. It was also shared that Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Georgia, and Moldova hold official candidate status for EU membership.
This step for Moldova and Ukraine signals a period in which the enlargement process is gaining momentum again. However, the actual start and progress of negotiations will depend on the completion of discussions within the Council and maintaining political consensus in subsequent stages.
