Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, signaled new sanctions following Russia’s latest missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
In a post on X, Kallas said: “Today, in response to the attacks, I will propose sanctions on more entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex.”
The High Representative stressed that condemnation alone cannot stop the attacks on Kyiv, and that military support for Ukraine and pressure on Moscow must be increased.
Kallas, recalling that the EU this week disbursed 6 billion euros as part of the 90 billion euro support loan set up to bolster Kyiv’s defenses, said: “We will keep increasing the cost for Russia until it understands that it cannot win.”
According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the Russian military attacked across Ukraine with 74 missiles and 496 armed drones that same day.
Meanwhile, the EU proposed a new sanctions package in early June targeting Russia’s economy, covering the banking, energy, and trade sectors. New sanctions on Russia require unanimity among all member states to enter into force.
