Moscow came under a large-scale drone attack on the morning of September 20. One of the targets was the Moscow Oil Refinery, located in the Kapotnya district in the southeast of the Russian capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that some drones managed to reach the refinery grounds, damaging the facility.
Fire at the Moscow Oil Refinery

A fire broke out at the oil refinery following the attack. Footage released from the scene shows thick smoke rising over the refinery area.
The exact extent of the damage is still being assessed. There is currently no information that the facility has completely ceased operations.
One of Russia’s key oil refineries
The Moscow Oil Refinery is one of Russia’s major oil-processing facilities and plays an important role in supplying fuel to the capital region.
According to Reuters, the facility processed around 11.6 million tonnes of crude oil in 2024. During the same period, the refinery produced around 2.9 million tonnes of gasoline and 3.2 million tonnes of diesel fuel.

Large-scale drone attack on Moscow
The attack on the oil refinery took place amid a mass drone raid on Moscow and the Moscow region.
According to Russian authorities, air defenses have intercepted more than 1,600 drones since Saturday, around 450 of which were heading toward Moscow.
Two people were killed in the Moscow region as a result of the attacks, while residential buildings and cars were also damaged.

In recent years, Ukrainian drones have repeatedly struck oil-refining and energy infrastructure in Russia.
