A drone exploded at around 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday at a bus stop used by staff of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency said one person was killed in the incident.
According to a statement from the agency citing the plant director, a total of 16 people, including staff and contractors, were affected by the explosion. Three of those injured were in serious condition.
The plant director described the explosion as the “worst event” the facility had faced.
Drone’s origin could not be determined
It could not be determined whether the drone that caused the explosion belonged to Russia or Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine regularly accuse each other of creating the risk of a nuclear disaster at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility with six reactors, in the first weeks of the 2022 invasion.
Grossi calls for protection of nuclear facilities
Following the explosion, International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi called on military commanders and all other parties targeting nuclear power plants or personnel working at these facilities to immediately halt their actions.
Grossi said such actions posed a major risk to nuclear safety and security during the conflict.
