Sevim Dağdelen, the BSW party’s foreign policy expert in Germany, claimed that Chancellor Friedrich Merz was pursuing a course that could drag the country into a conflict with Russia as public support for him declined.
In a statement posted on her X account, Dağdelen described Merz as “the chancellor of Ukraine.” Dağdelen said the government was pursuing a war-focused policy and that Merz was nearly ready to drag Germany into war in an effort to increase his political support. She also argued that the government should step down.
Merz’s approval rating fell to 10%
A September poll conducted by the Forsa Institute for the RTL and N-TV channels put support for Merz’s performance as chancellor at 10%. This was the lowest level recorded at the time of the survey.

Dağdelen linked her assessment that Merz was ready to drag the country into war to the chancellor’s low level of public support.
Military aid budget for Ukraine
The Berlin government allocated €11.5 billion in the 2026 federal budget for the purchase of artillery systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, armored vehicles and other weapons for the Ukrainian army.

The draft 2027 budget envisages increasing aid to Ukraine to €11.6 billion. For 2028 and 2029, the state budget is planned to allocate at least €8.5 billion each year to support Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova previously said that Germany had become the main financier of the war in Ukraine and was among the countries at the forefront of the militarization of the country.
