Bus traffic from Ukraine to Poland at the Shehyni-Medyka border crossing will be suspended from June 15, 2026, until November 2027 due to repair works. The Ukrainian State Customs Service announced that only buses traveling from Ukraine to Poland will be unable to cross during this period.
The decision does not cover all vehicle traffic at the border. It was noted that buses and other crossings from Poland to Ukraine will not be affected.
Travel schedules to be reorganized
Authorities have called on bus companies to consider this information in their route planning. The prolonged closure will create a need to redirect passenger transport to different border crossings.
The Shehyni-Medyka crossing is located about 80 kilometers west of Lviv and is one of the nine land border crossings between the two countries. Therefore, the decision concerns one of the key crossing points that will directly impact passenger flow in the region.
Background of border congestion
Ukraine’s airspace has been closed since the full-scale war began in 2022, increasing demand for land and rail transport. The congestion at border crossings has highlighted the importance of alternative routes, especially for passenger and freight transport.
Meanwhile, border controls for Ukrainians entering the European Union are expected to become fully digital. Biometric scans and new travel authorization systems are anticipated to speed up crossings over time.
Until the maintenance works on the Shehyni-Medyka line are completed, bus operators will have to plan passenger movements according to new dates and alternative routes.
