Bulgaria, which turned to NATO as drone attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea intensified, has requested aircraft, missile systems, counter-drone defense systems and air patrols to strengthen its defense capacity.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the request was submitted to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Supreme Allied Commander Europe Alexus Grynkewich. He said attacks in Romania’s territorial waters showed the need to modernize the Bulgarian army and increase the country’s defense capacity.
Call for a joint strategy for Bulgaria, Türkiye and Romania
Stoyanov said the scope of the requested NATO support has not yet been clarified, adding that Romania and the Baltic states face similar needs. Saying European partners have turned their attention to the Black Sea, Stoyanov said he expects swift steps to strengthen defense capacity.

Stoyanov also stressed the importance of establishing a joint action strategy among Bulgaria, Türkiye and Romania.
Bulgaria has two reconnaissance systems
Stoyanov said Bulgaria is using its existing capabilities for surveillance and response and has two reconnaissance systems to monitor its territorial waters. He said a third reconnaissance system is expected to be deployed by the end of the year.

New towing operation expected for Chelsea 3
The Chelsea 3, which was attacked in the Black Sea, has anchored about 10 kilometers east of the village of Lozenets near Burgas.
An operation launched the previous day to tow the ship was halted due to bad weather. A new operation to tow the vessel is expected once weather conditions improve.
