Azerbaijan welcomed the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) nomination of Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for UN secretary-general.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizada said, in response to a media question, that Baku welcomed the initiative.
Hajizada said Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to ensuring that the selection of the next secretary-general is conducted in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter. He expressed hope that the process would conclude with an outcome that would help make the UN stronger and more effective in facing contemporary challenges.

Nusseibeh’s candidacy, announced by the UAE last week, received unanimous backing from the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Palestine also declared their support.
From 2013 to 2024, Nusseibeh served as the UAE’s permanent representative to the UN and held the positions of deputy president of the UN General Assembly and chair of the Executive Board of UN Women. If elected, she would become the first woman to lead the organization.
The second term of current Secretary-General António Guterres expires on December 31. Türkiye may also nominate former Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu for the post.
