The rise of the AfD in German politics was highlighted once again by nationwide polling results from the GMS research institute. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) received 30 percent support in the poll.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU), remained at 20 percent. GMS recorded this as the lowest level of support it has measured for the CDU/CSU to date.
Support for other parties
Support for the Greens was measured at 14 percent, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Left Party each received 11 percent in the poll.
Debate over Merz after Saxony-Anhalt
The CDU's heavy defeat to the AfD in elections in Saxony-Anhalt has brought debate over Friedrich Merz's leadership within the party back to the fore.
Speculation about a change in the chancellorship has continued for weeks, while North Rhine-Westphalia State Premier Hendrik Wüst is being considered among Merz's possible successors.
