Russian police detained a person in the Moscow region who was providing technical infrastructure for phone scammers. Tatyana Petrova, head of the Information and Public Relations Department of the Moscow Region Interior Ministry, announced that the operation was carried out in the city of Domodedovo.
Petrova stated that the 19-year-old local resident set up communication channels for phone scammers. It was established that the suspect, as part of a job he found through a messaging app in April, installed and connected devices that convert internet traffic into mobile connections.
Thanks to these devices, scammers were able to make calls and send text messages using numbers belonging to Russian mobile operators. It was noted that the equipment was found in apartments rented in various cities of the Moscow region.
As part of the operation, police seized SIM cards from various operators, bank cards, and four multi-channel SIM boxes used in the fraud. Additionally, two apartments were identified in Noginsk and Balashikha containing six more GSM gateways.
A criminal case was opened against the suspect under Article 274, Part 3, Clause 3 of the Russian Criminal Code (illegal use of subscriber terminal for traffic routing or virtual telephone exchange). The suspect was arrested and sent to a detention facility.
