Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is seeking greater US support for interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, said the munitions are necessary for his country to get through the winter months.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine has 2.5 times fewer interceptor missiles this year than it had last year. Claiming that Russia is launching twice as many ballistic missiles each month as it did in the past, Zelenskyy said July was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, according to United Nations data.
Additional Patriot support from Washington
The Ukrainian leader said he had conveyed his request for more US assistance for Patriot systems to the White House through phone calls and messages, as well as through allies.
Zelenskyy also confirmed that he had recently spoken by phone with US Vice President J. D. Vance. However, he did not say whether Vance had asked Ukraine during the call to halt attacks on a Russian oil port on the Black Sea.
Zelenskyy said it remained unclear how US President Donald Trump's pledge to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles using its own resources would be implemented, adding that the practical details had not been clarified.
The peace plan and Donbas
Zelenskyy said Ukraine had submitted new proposals as part of the peace process led by Trump and called on the United States to become more involved in the plan.
Arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want to end the war, Zelenskyy claimed that pressure on Russia also remained insufficient.
Zelenskyy rejected the idea of giving up the territories still under Ukrainian control in Donbas and stressed that security guarantees were of fundamental importance to Kyiv.
