Chinese President Xi Jinping pressed Washington to “adhere to the correct position of opposing ‘Taiwan independence’” during closed-door talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24, Xinhua reported.
Xi said the United States should handle the Taiwan question “prudently” to lay a solid foundation for strategic cooperation between the two countries, adding that Beijing’s position on safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity is “crystal clear.”
The two leaders also discussed the war between the United States and Iran. Xi backed a return to the framework deal reached in June with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar and expressed hope for a comprehensive agreement that also covers the nuclear issue.
Washington and Beijing also agreed to extend their trade truce until January 2027. Trump called the talks a “great meeting.”
The three-day state visit is Xi’s first trip to the United States in more than a decade. A state dinner in his honor was planned for the evening.
