The United Arab Emirates temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain after oil leaking from one of the marine tankers washed ashore.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said that its technical and environmental monitoring system had detected pollution off the coast of Umm Al Quwain on the Persian Gulf. The leak caused an odor noticed by residents of Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, but the ministry said it posed no health risk.

Specialists began work to contain the pollution, clean the area and monitor the marine environment. The beaches will remain closed until the work is completed. Fishermen and beachgoers were asked to follow instructions and refrain from fishing in the affected areas. The tanker’s location and the volume of the spill have not been disclosed.
