The Ukrainian Air Force announced that on the evening of June 16, a Su-24 fighter jet crashed in the Hmelnitski region, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers on board.
The accident reportedly occurred around 7:00 PM local time during a mission flight. The aircraft belonged to the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade and was a frontline bomber.
The deceased were identified as Major Bohdan Hryhorovych Zaharulko and Senior Lieutenant Bohdan Oleksandrovych Babenko. The Air Force expressed condolences to their families, noting that the two soldiers defended the country until the very end.
Rescue teams and law enforcement were dispatched to the crash site. Authorities stated that the cause and circumstances of the incident are being investigated and that no civilian casualties have been reported.
The Starokostiantyniv Air Base, located in the Hmelnitski region, is known as one of the bases housing the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade. The aircraft was operating under this unit.
Earlier in the day, residents of the Shepetivka district in the region reported hearing an explosion, and videos purportedly showing the crashed aircraft were shared on social media. Some accounts mistakenly identified the plane as a MiG-29.
The Su-24 is a Soviet-made, twin-engine tactical bomber used by both Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine inherited these aircraft after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and continues to operate them through the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade.
Throughout the full-scale war, Ukraine has rarely announced losses of fighter jets and military equipment targeted by Russia.
This accident is one of the recent examples of aircraft and pilot losses Ukraine has suffered in the war. In April 2025, 26-year-old F-16 pilot Pavlo Ivanov died during a mission.
