Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who now serves as Norway's finance minister, spoke in Budapest at an event marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
“Our support for Ukraine is not charity. It is an investment in our own security and in the future of a democratic and peaceful Europe,” Stoltenberg said.
“We cannot allow Russia to win. The struggle for freedom must continue,” he added.
Parallels with 1956
Stoltenberg spoke on October 23, the anniversary of the beginning of the 1956 uprising, which was suppressed by Soviet troops. He led NATO from 2014 to 2024 and returned to Norway's government as finance minister in 2025.
