Artificial intelligence, e-commerce and unmanned aerial vehicles will come under the remit of a new committee in Russia’s State Duma. The committee will oversee work on developing these fields.
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, announced the creation of the Committee on Digital Development and Artificial Intelligence at a joint meeting with United Russia party leaders. Aleksandr Sidyakin, one of the party’s senior officials, will be appointed chairman of the new committee.
With the committee’s establishment, policymaking responsibilities for emerging technology fields such as artificial intelligence, e-commerce and unmanned aerial vehicles will be consolidated under a single body, having previously been divided among different parliamentary committees.
Separate body for criminal and administrative legislation
The State Duma will also establish a Committee on Criminal and Administrative Legislation. The committee will be chaired by United Russia member Yuriy Petrov and will be separated from the remit of the existing Committee on State Building and Legislation.
The Committee on State Building and Legislation reviews up to a quarter of the bills in the lower house and conducts important legislative work with Kremlin lawyers. The possibility of transferring part of the committee’s workload to another body had previously been raised.
Medvedev said that State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin had been nominated again by President Vladimir Putin to continue in his post.
United Russia expected to win 349 seats
Medvedev said United Russia was expected to win 349 seats in the 450-seat State Duma after the parliamentary elections scheduled for the weekend.
The final results of the elections are expected to be announced on Friday.
